DEBATE: conspóid, pléidh, aighneas, tagra, iomar-
bháigh. Aighneas and iomarbháigh would apply to rather
keen controversy, such as one would not wish always to
prevail at Irish meetings. Tagra, the discussion of a par-
ticular point, not a general debate.

A MEMBER: comhalta, cumanntóir, páirteach, páir-
tidhe, ball. Many of high authority on Irish object to
the use of ball, except in some fixed phrases, as ball
eaglaise. Comhalta, cumanntóir, member of a society
or association (comhaltas, cumann). Páirteach, páir-
tidhe, a person associated with others in any undertaking.
A member of a certain section or body, duine de bhuidhin
éigin.

COMMITTEE: lucht gnótha, lucht comhairle, foireann.
Foireann is often used in a depreciatory sense, like
“crew” in English. But it has also been used to mean a
set of persons, &c., e.g. a set of chessmen. Lucht does not
lend itself to use in the plural. Coiste, which means
“a jury,” seems suitable enough.
