Níor chleachdais ag sochraid doiligh, ná ag tigh tórraimh, Ag Aifreann phobail, ag tobar, ná i dtionólaibh, Gan capall mear socair go brosduightheach, bonnógach, Dod' ghlacadh 'n-a bhfochair ag toghthaibh gach paróiste. A chara mo chogair, 's a shoirbh-fhir chineolta, Ní fada go gcloisfir na gothanna thaitneochas riot. NOTES AND VOCABULARY. pionós, penance. tobar, a holy well, here bonnóg, a leap, bonn, the sole. toghtha, sing. and pl. chosen, the chosen ones. cineólta for cineálta, kindly. cothuigh, sustain (thyself here). Cothughadh, sustenance. Mar chaithis an choinnel, caith an t-órlach, proverb, "as you have spent the candle, spend the (remaining) inch." It is not worth while giving up so near the end.
