GREANN NA GAEDHILGE.

CAILLEACH GAN DÉIRC.

Cailleach do bhí ag dul thart fá Nodlaig.
D'iarr rud beag ime ar bhean an tighe.
Dhiúlt bean an tighe: dubhairt sí nach raibh
se aici. Seo mar adubhairt an chailleach:

Oidhche Inide gan fheoil,
Oidhche Nodlag Mór gan im,
Domhnach Cásg gan arán,
Is fáth mo ghearáin libh.

Ag dul thart, going about, going her rounds. Thart,
often = round (adv.) in Leath Chuinn. Fá Nodlaig,
at Christmas. Rud beag ime, a little butter. Oidhche
Inide, the night before Ash-Wednesday. The use here
is adverbial as are also those that follow. Gan fheoil,
without meat, no meat; so also gan im, gan arán.
Oidhche Nodlag Mór, Christmas Eve. Domhnach Cásg,
Easter Sunday. Tomás O Corragáin sa' Chaisleán
i n-aice Cairrge Machaire Rois, d'innis.
