1. Níor fheuch bean thar a gualainn riamh
nach bhfuigheadh sí leithsgeul.

3. Póca folamh, buaileadh sé bóthar.

4. Ar a mheisge nó ar a chéill, budh cheart

One should recognise his own friend,
drunk or sober.

5. An uair bhíonns (bhíos) an bolg lán, is
mian leis an gcnáimh síneadh.
When the belly is full, the bone loves
to stretch.

6. An áit a mbíonn an sonas, bíonn cuid
de'n donas suaidhte thríd, — nó, bíonn
an donas 'na orlaighibh thríd.
Where there is prosperity, there is ill-
fortune mixed with it, — or, there is
ill-fortune in inches through it.

7. Is fearr glas 'ná aimhreas.
Better a lock (i.e., security) than doubt.

8. Ní'l fhios nach mar is doilighe is fearr,
cidh gur deacair a rádh gurab eadh.
One does not know but the most
trying situation is the most advan-
tageous, though it be hard to admit
it.
