CELTIC COMMERCE. BY DAVID COMYN. B. “Maoidheadh gach n-aon a shlighe 'san tsaoghal, Maoidheadh an cléireach, maoidheadh an ceannuidhe: Maoidheadh na mílidh a gclú 's a réim, 'S maoidhim-se an déirc, 'sé céird is fearr í.”
NOTES. In 1166 King Rury O'Connor held the last of the Tailte “fairs,” after he had been recognised in Dublin and by the most important native princes. Keatings writes of Aonach Tailtean:— “Mar a gceang- ladaois fir Éireann cleamhnas agus cáirdeas ré chéile; agus is soibheusach an nós do bhíodh aca 'san gcómhdháil-sin, mar atá na fir ar leith leó féin, agus na mná ar leith leó féin do'n taoibh eile; agus a n-aithreacha agus a máithreacha ag snadhmadh eadorra
go bpósadaois gach lánamhain díobh d'a roichiodh a chéile i n-éacht agus i gconnarthaibh;— amhail adeir an file — “Gan teacht fear i bhfarradh ban, Gan mná i bhfarradh bhfear bhfionnghlan; Acht cách ag cádhas ó a dtoigh I n-árus an árdaonaigh.”
