<lb n="15"/><span>"Anthony Rafferty (who composed the following</span>
<lb n="16"/><span>Poems and Songs) was blind from the age of five</span>
<lb n="17"/><span>years.  He was born on 30th March, 1779, at </span>
<lb n="18"/><span>Cultemagh, Co. Mayo, died 25th December, 1835, near</span>
<lb n="19"/><span>Loughrea, Co. Galway.  He was a minstrel by pro-</span>
<lb n="20"/><span>fession, played the violin tolerably; and was accustomed</span>
<lb n="21"/><span>to recite his own poems, as well as other old Irish</span>
<lb n="22"/><span>compositions, and to sing his own songs accompanied</span>
<lb n="23"/><span>by the music of his violin.  I knew him. He was an</span>
<lb n="24"/><span>honest man.  James Hardiman.  Staraídhe cúramach </span>
