NAMES OF BIRDS AND PLANTS.

Referring to the names of birds and plants supplied you
by Pádraig Mac Piarais, the following are the variants
in use in Ballyvourney and borders of Kerry.

Creabhar = Woodcock.
Creabhar Caoch = Horsefly.
Ruadhán = Sparrow Hawk.
Seabhac = Sparrow Hawk.
Ruadhán bhalla is used for spider.
Fiolar = eagle.
Faoileann not faoilleán = Seagull.
Fáinleóg = Swallow.
Caistín cloch not Caislín = Stone Chatterer.
Cúirliún = Curlew.
Gubadán na Cuaiche. The bird that attends on the cuckoo.
Naoscach = Snipe.
Gabhairín a' reótha = Jacksnipe. His chattering resem-
bles that of a goat, an it is supposed to mean
Glanaidh na meadaracha tá na ba breith.
Ciarseach = Missel thrush. You cannot adopt the rule
Caol le caol, &c, in this word according to phonology.
Cág = Jackdaw.
Ceann Cait = Owl. A very expressive name.
Druide = Starling.
Pilib a' Chleite = Magpie. There is such a saying as Lá
Philib a' chleite. What day that is it would be interest-
ing to know.
Gearra Guirt and Tradhna are use for the Corncrake, as
Codladh an Tradhna ort alluding to his silence during
the winter.
Bainne Cíche na mbó mbleacht = Cowslip.
Seamair Mhuire: The r is slender here also.
Cam an ime = Buttercup.
