DONNCHADH RUADH I D-TALAMH-AN-
ÉISG ROCHAN.

I.
A I was walking one evening fair,
Agus mé go déigheanach a m-Baile Seághan;
I met a gang of English blades,
Agus iad na d-traochadh aig neart a namhad:
I boozed and drank both late and early,
With these courageous men of war;
'S gur bhinne liom na Sagsanaigh aig rith
air éigin,
'S gan de ghaoidheil ann acht fíor-bheagán.

II.
I spent my fortune by being freakish,
Drinking, raking, and playing cards;
Gidh nach raibh airgiod agam ná gréithre,
Na rud 'san t-saoghal acht nidh gan áird.
Then I turned a jolly tradesman,
By work and labour I lived abroad;
A's bíodh ar m'fhallaing' gur mór an bhreug sin,
'S gur beag de'n saothar do thuit lem' láimh.

III.
Newfoundland is a fine plantation;
It will be my station before I die;
'S mo chrádh go m-b'fhearr liom a bheith i
n-Éirinn,
A' díol gáirtéirí 'ná a' dul fá'n g-coill.
Here you may find a virtuous lady,
A smiling fair one to please your mind:
An paca staighionna is measa tréithe!
Go m-beiridh me shaoghal bheith as a radharc.

IV.
I'll join in fellowship with “Jack-of-all
trades,”
The last of August could I but see:
'S tá's [ta fhios] aig Coisdealbhadh, 'sis
maighisdir báid é.
Gur b'olc an lámh mé air muir ná air tír.

V.
Come drink a health, boys, to Royal George,
Our chief commander, nár órduigh Críost:
A's bíoch? bur n-athchuingheadha chum Muire
Mháthair
E féin 'sa gháraidhe do leagadh síos.
'Sa Chríost go bh-feicidh mé an bhrúid d'á
chárnadh,
Aig an Mac so air fán uainn thall 'san
bh-Frainc.
