ROSE FARRELLY

I
Draw near each constant fair one and give ear to what I compose,
Ós anois is mian liom tréartha na déagh-mhná chur síos air fheabhas:
She is proper, tall and stately, her praise I'll now begin,
'S 'air liom gur dheise an chraobh í ná Déirdre chuir Clann Uisneach
thair tuinn.

II
Down by a chrystal fountain surrounded by dazzling beams
'Sé thárluigh dhamh-sa an bhlánaid na mbán-chrobh budh deise méin;
She appeared to me like Venus or Phoebus that shines most clear,
'S tráth chonairc meise an mhaighdean 'sé thóig céad soighde thríd lár mo
chroidhe.

III
My love she's like the daisies in April that gently grow,
A dá chígh chruinne ghlégheala 's a craobh-fholt mar sgáinní óir;
It is in her breast in safety I would daily my heart repose,
'S a bhantracht annsacht éigse ná tréig-se do ghrádh air ór.

IV
My love she doth resemble the swan on the foaming main,
Le maise, deise 's breáigheacht gur sháruigh sí maitheas Gaedheal;
Her modesty all over is more than I can explain,
'S a rosga malla mómhar do bhreóidh is do mhearuigh mé.

V
I courted you sincerely - I own it to be true -
Má tá tú do mo thréigbheál, a spéir-bhean is deise snuadh,
Do you mean for to deceive me and leave me in misery?
'S a chailín deas na bpéarlaí táim réidh le do chumann caoin.

VI
Draw near my lovely fair one, release me and set me free,
'S gur i mbrollach geal do léiní, a chéad searc, atá mo chroidhe;
You are the only female that can ease my calamity,
Agus rachadh meise a dh'éag, if you forsake me, Rose Farrelly.
